Rouge explains traumatic cop experience

SA Hip Hop Femcee, Rouge recently experienced an unpleasant experience with a cop and it was right in the driveway of her own home.

Rouge narrated the whole incident via her Twitter handle. According to the singer whose music is heavily influenced by Drake, Tupac, Logic and Lauren Hill, it was only after their car had pulled out that they discovered it was a police car after all, and that was when the police switched on their siren.

Relief replaced alarm in Rouge and her partner. They were in the presence of law officers and not some rapacious malefactors. They pulled up by the kerb of their flat and, according to her, she tried to explain to the cops why she and her partner had swerved from the unknown vehicle in front of them

She tried to explain that she and her partner had thought the cops were robbers, the cops not having turned on their siren at the moment of encounter.

But the cops were not having it. The ladies in the team were much more understanding and even apologized, she said. But the man among them was just plain disagreeable, searching her car even when she had identified herself. Said Rouge: “The lady cops oh they apologize they understandBUT the other cop tells us to get out of ny second. WE ARE IN MY DRIVEWAY! He opens my car and I tell him what the hell is he doing eh can’t do that.”

The cop said he thought they were robbers and that he didn’t know that Rouge lived there. She continued: “He literally looked for EVERY cause to arrest us ON MY DRIVEWAY! Then he decides to Check our licenses and said my partner has the wrong one cause his from zimbut once again. That wasn’t enough for him to arrest us then he goes on to explain that my car looked suspicious and… ”

In the end, though, she said her father came out with her sister and both were pissed by the cop’s impudence and supposed unprofessionalism. They asked if the cop had a warrant of arrest, and if he did, to disclose it.

They were let go, but Rouge, 25, who won the Best Female Artiste of the Year of the South African Hip-Hop Awards in 2017, said she felt harassed. And still feels so.

It seemed like a stuff of fiction, but Rouge’s experience is one of many similar incidents we get to experience in the country but they don’t get to mainstream media because, well, there was no celebrity involved.
